What I Liked:
This movie is definitely…different. And I mean that in a good way. Writer/Director Shane Black has a very unique style. In fact, I knew nothing about this movie until my boyfriend suggested going to see it and showed me the trailer. I immediately said, “That reminds me a lot of the movie Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” which my bf had never heard of. So I looked it up, and guess what! That was by Shane Black as well!
Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling have great chemistry. They feed off of each other so well and are pretty darn hilarious. Ryan Gosling physical comedy is one of my favorite things here. It’s not to slapstick level, but it gets so ridiculous and silly! Yet, somehow, he makes it looks natural and not rehearsed.
Another standout is Angourie Rice, who plays Ryan Gosling’s 13-year-old daughter in the movie. The character feels like a real, mature teenager without feeling overdone (an example of and overdone teenager, in my opinion, would be the movie Juno. None of the teenagers in the movie seem real or plausible to me). the character is well written, but Angourice Rice really pulls it off. I hope to see her in many more movies.
I also liked the mystery. Yeah, it was crazy and absurd and more akin to fantasy than reality, but most of all, it was fun. It was interesting and engaging, and honestly, some of the twists and turns really shocked me.
What I Didn’t:
The only thing I can really think to complain about is that some things were a little too convenient. But then, I largely forgive the movie for that, because this is not a drama. It is an action/adventure/comedy/buddy-cop-like movie. It’s hits all the marks that it needs to, so if the plot is a bit thing in some places or plot holes exists, it doesn’t really matter. I give it a pass.
Warnings for the movie include graphic violence, language, sexual content, smoking, drinking, and…basically everything. This movie is rated R for a reason!
This movie is so much fun! In fact, the more I think about it, the more I like it. It was funny, clever, and completely unexpected. I’m glad that it received good reviews over on rottentomatoes.com, because otherwise, I probably wouldn’t have considered seeing it. This movie isn’t for everyone, but if it sounds or looks at all interesting to you, I highly recommend it. And also, you should check out Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, because that movie doesn’t get enough love!
My Rating: 4/5 (Good movie. I’ll definitely see it again sometime.)
